Rio/Amsterdam/Madrid/Barcelona/Milan/Florence/Vienna/Dubai/Jerusalem/Mumbai/Bangkok/Kyoto/Tokyo/Sydney but that's pretty much it.

Well, I just learned there are three Mount Vernons. There's the one in New York I didn't know was there. There's one that's a DC suburb and there one in Western Washington State north of Seattle. Santee is actually a San Diego suburb and is not names for the Sioux as far as I know.

Don't think CDers are a representative sample. Most are far more geographical literate than the general population.

True, ask like 90% of my uncles, aunts and cousins some questions about countries outside Germanic and Latin Europe and they can't answer it, half of them can't even name 1 city of India
Asked my nearly 30 yo niece the other day to point out Antartica and New Zealand on a map, she pointed at Greenland and Indonesia

I had to check and yes, Escondido is a place in the San Diego area and part of American Graffiti was shot in Petaluma.
I have to say that I have mentioned all the cities I recognize the names of, but I am not entirely sure I can locate all of them, but as I said in an earlier post I know many names because I have followed minor league hockey for many years.
