In my opinion Hong Kong has the best public transit of any city I have spent significant time in. The trains are huge, run very frequently, are super-well integrated into their surroundings, and the options of mini-busses and full coaches complement the train system very well.

Singapore has very clean and comfortable public transit, but some of the train stations are not very well located or integrated with their surroundings, and the trains move pretty slow.

New York has more conveniently located stations, and I think has the only train system that runs 24 hours per day. It also has a lot of express trains to speed up the longer commutes.

Most big cities in Asia (Beijing, Taipei, Tokyo) have very clean and good public transit. Most big cities in Europe have less clean, but also pretty good public transit :-) I also like that many European cities also have bike share programs, which I think are awesome and are great for shorter commutes.

Most cities in North America have fairly terrible public transit.

Paris and London have excellent public transports, the same applies to Milan.
I can't speak for other big cities but I don't doubt that Berlin or Madrid have excellent infrastructures and means too.

Of the cities I've been to - New York, London and Paris. They are certainly the 3 best in the western world.

A few Asian cities probably have them beat by now though.

I would rate Seoul over London, System is newer, cleaner and less prone to delays. Thought the fact that it stops about 1pm is a big minus, at least London has its night buses. The Taxis are much cheaper in Seoul.

What about other European cities? A few spanish cities and a number of northern/central European cities might have as good transit as big cities like NYC, London or Paris. Barcelona? Madrid? Munich? Berlin? Stockholm?

Coverage looks excellent for all of these.

New York City - runs 24/7/365 and has the most subway station stops and the longest in terms of miles/km in the world, and among the oldest.

Montreal, Stockholm, Toronto all have great public transportation as well.

The issue with NYC is once you leave the area covered by the subway, rail service often isn't very good. It can often be rather clumsy to get from an outer neighborhood to another even in the area served by subway, though London might not be much better.

Toronto's subway is rather short considering the city size.
