I live in the Washington DC area. Things feel pretty peaceful here. Maybe even a little on the boring side, but I guess that's better than the opposite.

From the outside looking in, it doesn't seem that peaceful.

95% of the murders occur in the high-poverty Ward 8, according to the police chief in the article. This is typical of U.S. cities - where isolated low-income areas have a high crime rate. On the other hand, middle-class and affluent areas have close to zero crime.

If you don't count the ghettos, America would have one of the lowest crime rates in the developed world.

I could be wrong here but wouldn't that apply to most countries, especially western countries?

LOL. No offense, but that is a very American response. If the stats are bad, use the " it doesn't affect me " so it's OK.

that's like saying: if you dont count crime, America would have the lowest crime rates in the developed world

same can be said of any country.... crime happens usually in the places where crime usually happens...

So, how does poor people committing crimes on one another in some isolated ghetto affect your life if you don't live where they are?

If you count low income areas the same would go for any country in the developed world. If you counted out Rione Sanità, Forcella and Scampia, Naples murder rate would be extremely lower (it is around 2.5-3 at the moment) but it doesn't change the fact that it's the most violent city in Italy.

As a Southern Italian, this post offends me, many people here could make the same exact reasoning for organized crime. "If it doesn't affect my life why should i care?" This is the attitude that made organized crime thrive for more than a century, this is the attitude people like Falcone, Borsellino, Impastato, Dalla Chiesa, ecc. (if you don't know about them, read a bit) fought against and paid with their life for.

That's a very wrong attitude and not the way to face a problem that's your city's and your countries. This is where the Republican party is wrong, they represent the interest only of the wealthier part of the population. This may not affect you directly but it does indirectly and sooner or later someone you know will be affected from it in some ways.

Why do so many on this forum think "peaceful" = isolation?

I think the chance to get killed in South Africa, Madagascar and Papua New Guinea is a lot higher than in Ghana, Malawi and Thailand.

From OP: Excellent point. I'm interested in peaceful but don't want to be isolated.

I would forgo some or maybe many material things for peace and good relationships with people.
