You might want to note what happened with the THREAT of the Separatist Movement with Quebec from Canada.
Montreal was Canada's premier city then. It was the Banking and Finacial Center and much more. What happened then is maybe a warning? Most moved to Toronto. Creating a NEW premier city for Canada today.
Of course Succession did not happen. But Montreal LOST in the Elite of Canada headquartered there. Moved to a safer Non-Separatist Province.

Within the US, California is the most distinct of the continental US and to some Americans, is the least like the other continental states.
That is what some Californians and others would like to believe, but is completely untrue. California is culturally and politically very similar to many other U.S. states, especially those in liberal areas like the east coast.
The only reason that Californians think they're different is because they are geographically isolated from most of the U.S. population. You belong completely to the United States. :-)
If America doesn't recognise it, no one would; if America does, everyone would.
Here it is in a nutshell. Everything depends on if the US accepts the secession. Russia, Belarus, the Stans, Cuba and North Korea might recognise it just for fun.
This isn't the scope of the question but, 50% of the water in southern California actually comes from local sources, so it is not completely dependent. Negotiating water rights I don't think would be as hard as you think. The US would still need access to the ports and would probably want to keep a couple of military bases here. There's a trade right there.
Now, what countries if any, do you think would recognize CA?[/quote]
Who along the Pacific Rim would benefit from CA being independent?

I probably should have asked "how culturally similar is CA to the rest of the US". Then I probably would have received responses like, " such and such country would recognize it" LOL Had no idea this question was this difficult to answer LOL

Maybe you can try to play the victim card (aka Palestine) and get Sweden on board, or play the money card (aka Taiwan) and get a bunch of irrelevant ****holes that are about to be underwater to recognise you.
