only two types of people take it seriously or give it any credence

1. cynical phonies who wish to make money from manufactured outrage culture ( professional feminists , pseudo intelectuals etc )

2. outright idiots who genuinely take it serious

Is it something serious in US? Or is it just a leftist trendy?

Cultural "appropiation" is basic what is life all about. We are here to experiment the new and to grow up.
I want to "appropiate" culture always and always. Particulary that's why brazilian culture is so rich, being a melting point of many cultures of the world, creating new ones that are just fabulous.

Every Christmas I go to a production of "The Nutcracker Suite." It's downright shameful the amount of cultural appropriation Tchaikovsky was guilty of. And all those ballet companies just keep perpetuating it.

Russian dancers, Chinese dancers, Snowflake dancers. I can hardly stand it!

I heard on the news today that two women in Portland are being forced to close their burrito biz for "stealing" the recipe from poor Mexican women on their vacation. That will teach them! White people should only cook and eat white people food. And don't ever let me catch a Mexican eating a hot dog or he'll be sorry.

Well I guess it's mostly a leftist thing, but it's becoming more pervasive recently.

Bill Maher summarizes pretty nicely what is going on with democrats/liberals.

Most people don't take it seriously. Every culture contains derivatives of other cultures. We are writing English here (England) using a computer and the internet (largely an Anglo & American invention).

Cultural "appropriation" is meaningless. Cultural denigration - that's something different.
This.

In the touristic area of Salvador, braids are made in tourists as a souvenir.

Here it seems that the native is the one that appropiated his culture a little too much

Ever see someone wear a gigantic cross on their chest who have never set foot in a church?

How 'bout someone with a cap with NY in sparkle letters who have never set foot in a stadium?

Cultural misappropriation.

When there is apparent mockery.

For example,

White guy with dreadlocks - Not Cultural Appropriation
(He is wearing a hair style)

White guy with dreadlocks who spouts Rastafarian wisdom without a full understanding or context - Cultural Appropriation
(He is somewhat ignorant, but not intentionally disrespectful)

White guy with a crew cut who wears one of those Rasta tricolor beanies with fake dreads sticking out the back while smoking a giant spliff at a summer music festival - Cultural Denigration
(He is making fun at the expense of another's culture)

I wouldn't say that's "making" fun of another's culture but having fun.
I don't feel disrespected if you wear wooden shoes and walk around with a cheese under your arm.
