In the past 2 decades or so there's been a tremendous revival of these systems around the world. You can also add LRT systems as well as many new trams fall under that category as well.

Bordeaux had the first commercial tram catenary-free design, by electric power from the ground (APS).
There were some breakdowns in the first years of service but since then it is a very reliable system and today this technology is present in many French cities and for tram of Dubaï and Rio.

I remember seing this in Tours recently...
I like the design. But it's network is really modest. One line. Tours is quite small.
I guess it's common everywhere in Europe too now
