South Africa is not really poor for African standards. It is developed however a majority of the population still lives in poverty.

Botswana is also wealthy for African standards. It is also the best country in Africa to do business according to surveys.

Iran should be as wealthy as Saudi Arabia and unlike Saudi Arabia it has a lot of fertile land.

Israel is a surprise as the land there seems more fertile than other regions close by, even though they have the similar climate.

United Arab Emirates is a surprise and they have used the wealth they made wisely.

Venezuela should be wealthy as well, but has massive social and economic problems.
iran is again stymied by america , its a much more modern country than saudi arabia on every level in terms of culture , israel has far and away the richest diaspora of any nation on earth , of course its going to be wealthy , it is also the number one ally of the most powerful nation on earth ( which is of course due to its diaspora being so wealthy and powerful )

Uruguay should be as rich as any Western European country too IMO. From what I know its education system was one of the most advanced in the early XX century, and it always had a much lower population growth rate than any other Sudaca country bar Argentina. Perhaps it jus fell victim of its condition as a buffer country between Argentina and Brazil, and got too influenced by these countries politics.
You stated Slovakia, that is a poor country for European standards. I guess you mean Slovenia. Slovenia was the wealthiest part of Yugoslavia when it was a part of that country.

Uruguay should be wealthy by now too, yet government mismanagement throughout the years is the reason why it is not wealthy.

That is true, however it would have been even wealthier if it did not suffer from the military dictatorships of the past.

Its small population is a factor and its biggest city is just over a million people. However New Zealand has a similar population as Uruguay, however New Zealand is wealthier.

That is true. New Zealand had a lot of trade benefits from the UK for much of its history as a nation and it help it be developed.

Actually just before WW1 Argentina did certainly attracted British investments. It very much relied on British investments. It was one of the wealthiest countries in the world. However much of the wealth was in foreigners hands.

Well even though Apple has told Mr Trump to bring Apple factories in the US, it probably will not happen. They currently have a plant in Ireland still. So yes Ireland is like an American multinational colony.

Well of course New Zealand is an investment colony of Australia and China. The biggest Supermarket chain in New Zealand is owned by an Australian company. Well a reason why Auckland is so expensive is due to the Chinese buying so many properties there and with it raises the property prices. It the same case as Sydney.

That applies to both Australia and NZ.

Europe and North America are bigger players than China (or Asia), in terms of overseas investment. NZ still has relatively low levels of foreign investment, on a global scale, despite it's economic/political stability and the relative ease of doing business here.

Property is expensive in NZ due to lack of a capital gains tax, land banking, excessive building regulation, and immigration. Chinese property investors are still dwarfed by NZers, with multiple properties.

NZ was comparatively wealthier before the era of increased foreign investment.

every ( small ) country does what it can do gain an edge in todays globalised interconnected world , if ireland didnt have those u.s multinationals , we would be little more than a country which produces a lot of agricultural products , indigenous industry is pretty unimpressive here , its the only reason we are wealthier than new zealand which is also a major food producer , our proximity to europe is a trump card

china buys most of new zealands dairy and lamb , i had not considered the investment in real estate , they do that in many other places too

Speaking of Slovenia it is a bit weird that it is wealthy but in the meantime, Macedonia, Bosnia and Serbia what were members of the same and not so very big country of Yugoslavia, are relatively poor. (ok, Serbia and Bosnia were in war- because of that). The problem of Macedonia might be the of course lack of wealthy neighbours but I still wonder why is that gap relatively big.

wat, nope. there isn't any kind of US "embargo" on Venezuela. it's all their own government's fault.

not really.

Uruguay gdp per capita nominal is twice the Latin American average, in PPP is like 70% higher than LatAm average.

Many political subdivisions of several Latin American countries are as wealthy or wealthier than Uruguay, having a similar or a bigger population. Santander department in Colombia, for example.

Uruguay is actually wealthier than Chile on nominal terms. it also has lower poverty rates.
