Five of the ten most lucrative airline routes in the world starts and ends in London (all international routes). Three are in New York. And two are in Singapore and Sydney.
(1) London Heathrow – New York JFK
(2) Melbourne – Sydney
(3) Dubai – London Heathrow
(4) Singapore – London Heathrow
(5) San Francisco – Newark
(6) LAX – New York JFK
(7) Doha – London Heathrow
(8) Hong Kong – London Heathrow
(9) Singapore – Sydney
(10) Vancouver – Toronto
That Melbourne-Sydney one, not just one of the most lucrative but also one of the busiest, has always struck me as ridiculous since they are in the optimal range for high speed rail and with the nation’s capital of Canberra smack dab between the two. How is it that there is no high speed rail between the two and yet oodles of money have been spent on study after study?
I'm shocked Hawaii to Guam isn't on that list. The freaking flight is $1,300 each way and it ALWAYS seems full. Delta cleans up with that route for sure.
Probably not huge passenger numbers on the Hawaii-Guam route compared with NYC-London.
True. Its only one flight served by one airline. If we were talking profit on a particular flight, I'd bet that the Hawaii-Guam route would rank up there.

With a single mid route stop in Canberra I guess it might be a 4 hour trip with a good high speed rail link?
It would be expensive to build, but then think of all the extra flight slots that would free up at Melbourne and Sydney airports for increased international connections without having to spend on airport expansions.
