New Orleans? I'm willing to bet any South African city is more dangerous than New Orleans, or any other US city.
And you would be correct as New Orleans is not as dangerous as some major American cities. When you're talking about most murderous (highest per capita murder rates) New Orleans' 30 yr. avg. is higher than any major city in America. Comparing New Orleans to South African cities is like comparing grapes to watermelons as South Africa is more like a third world country.
Medellin and Cali are shoo-ins - several foreign tourists have been murdered in the Medellin area over the last two years which is weird as it's gotten no attention. Cali remains very dangerous.

what I want to know is if anyone here has been a victim of a VIOLENT crime (not petty theft for example) and where?
In my travels to several of the places on the lists here (knock on wood!) I've never had the experience. Nor known anyone else, in fact.
If your talking about most dangerous cities in the world New Orleans should never make that list as it is not even the most dangerous city in the U.S in reality. If it were, it wouldn't remain one of the most visited cities in the U.S. historically and currently. When it comes down to most deadly cities, which means per capita murder rates only, New Orleans has been more deadlier than Detroit and it's not as close as people think due to the fact that many still think that most dangerous and most deadly are one in the same and Detroit has ranked highest many times as most dangerous as any major city but in the last 20 yrs (1990-2009) Detroit has posted a higher per capita murder rate than New Orleans only 2yrs (1992 & 1999) while New Orleans' avg per capita murder rate over that 20 yr period is 59 per 100,000 and Detroit's avg per capita murder rate during the same 20 yr period is 46 per 100,000. So Detroit = most dangerous and New Orleans = most deadly
Although comprehensive figures aren't available for all of 2010, during the year's first six months, New Orleans led the nation with 31.2 homicides per 100,000 residents, followed by St. Louis (17.5); Baton Rouge (16.6), La.; and Detroit (16.1).

Wow, it's clear that South American cities are on the top most of lists. It's sad because I'd really love to see this continent. But it doesn't sound safe unless you have a native friend who will accompany.
Off the top of my head I would say Baghdad, which ironically used to be completely safe for residents and foreigners alike. Now that it's been liberated, it's become one of the most dangeous places on earth unfortunately
A city from the US will not ever appear on this list.
Reason being, I have been to many 3rd World Countries(3WC) where certain US equivalent laws are completely ignored. Image that level ignorance, then you will easily see where an individual can and will cross the line with no fear of repercussion, i.e. prison. Believe it or not, there can be some good with the lawlessness, too. For example, on a recent visit to a 3WC, the neighborhood identified a pedophile. Before the cops arrived, they actually drug him through the streets beating him to a pulp. He was screaming for the police to come.
I sorry but those who list American cities truly have no clue what they are saying until they visit a lawless area. Believe me, Detroit, East St Louis, Miami, Houston, etc are not that bad.
