I just recently read the cover story in the U.S. News & World Report from a few weeks back titled "Making America Better" and felt like sharing it. I found it to be a terrific read. My intent, and the article's, is not to bash the U.S. by any means, but to recognize that we have our faults as all countries do and it's worth investigating some of the ways of other countries who seem to come out on top in certain areas to see what exactly it is that they're doing, and determining whether or not such approaches to various social issues can work in this country; and even if they can't, it's always good to read about different ways of thinking and how different cultures behave.

Hats off for bringing this to our attention. I read the article as well.

We have much to learn from our neighbors across the pond and likewise they from us.

A good read! One of the two on the Netherlands was so spot-on (not permissive but preventive measures on social issues). Thanks for sharing it.

ok here is how controling capitalism and religion will help society. uncontrolled capitalism promotes greed. in fact, all capitalism promotes greed. one of the reasons usa is in iraq today is because of greed. the weapons manufacturer makes money off of war. to them, war is a good thing because if they are fighting, they need to buy weapons. contractors are also being paid to "rebuild" iraq. again, it is in their best interest for wars to happen. even if it wasnt the reason why usa went to iraq, you can see how that scenario would play out in different situations. uncontrolled capitalism basically gives people the green light to do whatever they want in the name of making money, no matter who gets hurt in the process. one of the reasons why global warming is happening today is because of capitalism. businessmen are selling vehicles that knowingly pollute the environment, all to make a quick buck. capitalism also promotes inequality. in this society, we have rich people who spend $1 million for birthday parties while there are people starving and sick. if you really want to know the dangers of capitalism, read anything by marx. one of the reasons why canadiens are healthier than americans is because of their caps on capitalism. the govt controls the businesses a little more. they also control the health care industry.
as far as religion goes, it promotes intolerance. one of the reason why there is so much homophobia is because of religion. religion also limits womens rights, encouraging them to stay home and allow the man to play the dominant role. religion has caused harm throughout the world and does so here at home. religion also promotees conformity which is dangerous because then people tend not to think for themselves and just listen to what they are told. that kind of blind obediance is not good for the country. it is the same kind of blind obediance that caused americans to believe there were nukes in iraq. if you want to have a healthy and strong country, its people must think independently and act according to evidence and not faith. religion undermines progress. most religious texts were written a long time ago and its teachings simply dont apply to the modern world. to tell a person to follow religious teachings is telling him to live a lifestyle that of 100 years ago. how can we move forward if we are living by guidelines meant for 100 years ago?

I tend to disagree overall with this,I agree that there are instances of abuse.

From what I see those who say capitalism is wrong, alot of times want more government control to stop it.But when has government not been greedy also?

Religion,in this case I'll defend Christianity.People will pervert the meaning, that does not mean that the pure word of it is false or untruthful.

You say people must act independently yet what you propose would lead to less individuality and more thought control and lack of a willing to better ones self.

I tell you what ,everything you have is not yours, everthing you labor for will be taken from you to those who really need it.Any thing you invent will be the governments. The state is your god,all wisdom comes from the mighty and all knowing chairman. All that you have (or most likely dont have) is becuase of the generosity of the wonderful leaders.

yeah

what is so telling about this is that while America is not a utopia, every country that has promoted no religion and a controlled economy has failed with its people desperate to leave, some who came to America and love it here. And that certain countries that promoted this system pilaged its people for the war machine and industry. The only people who prospered were those in certain high positions. And then used that war machine to conquer other lands for their resources, like Tibet and Afghanistan for example.

And Im pretty sure that womens abuse and homophobia was all to common in those countries ,only there they get sent to a work camp.
