For as far back as I can remember, I have always been able to bend words at will. Words kind of just come into my head with ease. I will think about words. I will think about that quick turn-of-phrase. I will also think about that witty line that, if the words were left to stand on their own, wouldn't mean anything, but when merged together they form something of meaning.
...Words as art?
English was always my strongest area and I like to study words at times, but ironically enough, I am not a veracious reader and if I didn't actively practice spelling, well, I might have put my English teachers into cardiac arrest with my spelling habits. I also don't quite seem to grasp the official rules to writing between verbs, nouns, punctuation and so on, but I "just know" how to use them properly. Sometimes when writing (on paper, so no spell-check) I will leave off the last letter of plural word. It's completely unintentional. It's really quite strange and I have never been able to figure out the correlation between an above average writing ability with the difficulties with some of the other aspects like spelling. I am also a much better writer than an orator.

Has anyone else had a similar experience?
I've not had a similar experience to yours, budgetlord, but I know others who have. I'm a pretty good writer and speller. I have a couple of friends who are excellent writers but whose spelling is atrocious! One of the most brilliant people I know can't spell the simplest words. He has no clue. He was my boss a long time ago, and when we worked together, he often had me proof read his work because he knew he was a lousy speller. I rather enjoyed pointing out my boss' errors!

I took a ten-week workshop once, and one of the women in my class was a very talented writer, creative and imaginative. We were all impressed, but her spelling was terrible. I can't understand how someone can not remember how to spell words that they've seen before, but apparently, this is true of some.

Its possible, personally, I pay little attention to the spelling of words.

I don't think it's something people do consciously--you just know you saw the word and can visualize it and therefore spell it when you need to on that little screen inside your forehead.
I have had articles/letters printed three times in my life.
Good for you.

Not bragging in any way. Good effort though.
Ha!
Back to the published writing... spell check? editors?
As Ms Swindell said: Spelling (and grammar) counts.
"Writing has laws of perspective, of light and shade just as painting does, or music.
If you are born knowing them, fine. If not, learn them.
Then rearrange the rules to suit yourself." -Capote

For a moment there, I had the frightening notion that I was reading about myself--but I knew I hadn't typed that posting!
If there is a difference between us, it is that I happen to be an excellent speller. No, let me take that back. Given the state of illiteracy into which the whole country is slowly sliding, I am a very excellent speller...perhaps even bordering on greatness.
(But give me a pop quiz and ask me to diagram a sentence--that's the stuff of nightmares!)
