It is inaccurate and low class to call a public restroom a bathroom.
Everything you said is correct.
Ignore the newspeople.

Both terms are correct.

Quote:
restroom

noun
rooms or a room having a washbowl, toilet, and other facilities for use by employees, visitors, etc., as in a store, theater, or office.
Restroom | Define Restroom at Dictionary.com

Quote:
bathroom

noun
1. a room equipped for taking a bath or shower.
2. toilet (def 2).
Bathroom | Define Bathroom at Dictionary.com

The terms are regularly used interchangeably. The fact that you don't like one or the other is irrelevant. It's not about you.

And for the people parsing out the constituent components of the words, two points:
*one no more 'rests' there than one 'washes' there, and
*anyway, that's not how the English language works

What did the ladies in your office call it?

The problem is in much of the Anglophone world "restroom" specifically marks you out as American/low class. The idea of Americans trying to be posh is already funny. But to distinguish it on "restroom" is ironic. One would say WC, bathroom or such. If one wanted to use a euphemism, as a lady, then powder room is preferred. Restroom - no.

I just keep picturing Cousin Randy emptying his RV septic down the drain in front of the Griswolds house in National Lampoons Christmas Vacation....saying, "Clark the ****ters full."

If I was asked where the toilet was I would tell them it's in the bathroom.
