I understand that perspectives on winter can be subjective. I have lived through the last 40 plus Chicago winters. Chicago can have some brutal winter days. My spouse is seriously exploring a position in Casper. People have communicated that Casper winters are tough. Does anyone have insight how Chicago winters compare to Casper winters? Thanks

In my opinion, when it is 45 degrees in the Chicago area, the north half of Indiana, or the southern half of the lower peninsula of Michigan, it feels like 8 degrees in Casper. Wind and all.

The dangers of driving are more of a trade off. While those states generally get more ice and there are more multi-car accidents, out here, there are long stretches of road with little traffic necessitating more preparation for possibly having to stay with your car for a long time, more ground blizzards that make finding the road difficult in some ways, and more instances of black ice.

Some people love the difference. Others really, really dislike the weather there.

Winters are a little longer in Casper, due to the higher elevation, and a bit windier than in the Windy City, believe it or not. But they're drier -- less humidity and more sunshine. And less snow. I'd rate Casper's winters just a little easier to take, personally, due to the lower humidity and more sunny days. Neither are too pleasant, but either are tolerable.

If you can pickup a winter sport that you enjoy, country skiing, downhill skiing, snowmobiling, etc., it can make the winters much more enjoyable. When I was younger and an avid downhill skier, I looked forward to the winters. Now I look forward to summers.

I've never lived in either city, but I grew up and have spent a lot of time in Iowa, which has similar weather to Chicago's, and I don't live too far from Casper. Overall, I'd take Casper in a heartbeat over Chicago.
