just wondering others' personal opinion on which is the best energy town in wyoming to move to?

pay, housing, entertainment, weather, hospital/doctor services, or any other criteria you think about.

Sorry to be a little negative, here, but if you're asking about the "traditional" energy towns like Gillette, Rock Springs, Rawlins, and just about anywhere on the I-80 corridor, I'd say none of 'em! Add Douglas to that mix with all the activity going on there. Day laborers have filled the towns to overflowing, not enough housing for them or anyone else, not much to do but go to the bars and, then, get into trouble, lots of roughnecks have brought some fairly undesirable "traits" to town, etc., etc. If you don't have to live right 'in' one of those towns, try Sheridan, Buffalo, and north. You'd still be in the Powder River Basin where the CBM rerieval is big but those cities/towns have much more to do and a more diverse population as far as how they make a living and the level of education.

If I was pushed to actually HAVE TO live in one of the energy town, I guess it would be Gillette. They have a good, sizeable stable population and people who have been there for long periods of time. Also quite a bit of ranching there. Downside - flat, wind, not much of what outsiders might call "scenery".

Are you considering a move to an energy town for the sake of a job or ....?

We just moved to Gillette. It's not as "flat" as people are led to believe. The town itself has hills around it and the scenery isn't bad at all. Since we've been here there hasn't been any wind (Casper is where it's usually really windy!). Having been born & raised in Wyoming then spending 14 years in the Billings are I have found the people of Gillette to be the most friendly I've ever met. Rent is high here, but if you do some work you can find a nice place for lower than average rent. Buying homes is very comparable to Billings, Casper, etc. yet much lower than Sheridan or Buffalo. Utilities and food are lower than they were in Billings and gas is what I believe is the lowest in the state at $3.60-$3.63/gal. We have found that there is plenty to do in the Gillette area, especially if you like the outdoors. And the good thing is that if you like to go to a "city" once in awhile Rapid City and Casper are only a couple of hours away and Billings is only a little over 3 hours away. Gillette is between the Big Horn mountains and the Black Hills, both beautiful places. There is a lot of growth going on in Gillette and the city is putting a lot of money into projects for all citizens to enjoy. The schools are wonderful. The jobs are more than plentiful and pay is well above average for any kind of job. Unskilled jobs (car wash, fast food, etc.) are paying $10 or more and hour. So, for energy towns, I would say that Gillette would be your best bet. You have to check it out yourself, though! We really researched a lot of towns in Wyoming before we settled on Gillette. Best wishes to you!

I tend to agree with Dori and Georgia, they both have great points...

There are both pluses and negatives living in or near a boom town. Lots of decent people, but always a couple greedy one's who want nothing more to make a quick buck...

I say take a drive out here and do some visiting of different towns if possible for ya...

A lot of people told me before I moved out to Wyoming I would either "love it or hate it" ...

Best of luck you ya!

That's probably the best advice you will get on this topic.

I don't like Gillette. But that's me. I have my reasons, and they're probably the very same reasons that other people like it there. I know you asked for people's personal opinions, but when making a big move like that it's really important to see for yourself.

I would add Pinedale to the energy boomtown list.
