My wife and I just finished a western national parks/scenic tour of several states, including parts of Wyoming. We were enchanted by the incredible natural beauty and delighted by the hospitality of everyone we met. The state appears to populated by folks who are naturally friendly and very helpful to bumbling tourists. We can understand why so many folks want to move to your beautiful state and also appreciate why natives are concerned about continued development and population growth. We won't be part of the problem as we are happy, permanent Marylanders but will definitely return to further explore your many attractions. We hope that Wyoming can manage it's future in a manner that will preserve it's unique beauty and the wonderful character of it's people. Our thanks to all the folks who displayed such a welcoming and friendly attitude that really made our experience delightful. Our only disappointment was in not being able to find the famous T-shirt - "Welcome to Wyoming, Now Leave" which we thought is a legitimate and very sensible viewpoint . None of the many T-shirt shops we visited carried it . Please accept our best regards to all you fine folks.
PS - if you are heading to the Baltimore/Washington DC area and want some local pointers on our area, give a shout. We'd like to reciprocate the hospitality we enjoyed in Wyoming.

I'm glad you had a wonderful trip. What all did you get a chance to see while you were here?

Cody - the Buffalo Bill Historical Center/Museums was/were fantastic! We also bought 6 chances on the 1952 MGTD being raffled off in September (fingers crossed ). Bighorn mountains, Shoshone Valley & National Forest, Yellowstone! Jackson/Jackson Hole area/Grand Tetons, Snake River float and white water rafting!!! and countless scenic vistas. Our only major regret is that we didn't have more time - we will definitely be back!

Glad you such a wonderful time in this overall glorious state. It is nice to be in an area where people are friendly. (although some folks say were freindly cause we are lonely) I've been and lived in quite a few states in my life and so far WY and ND are by far the friendliest states I've been too or lived in. WY wins out over ND though when it comes to beauty, but there are a few spots that are scenic there as well. MT used to be pretty friendly, but not as much as it used to be, I think it's because of to many changes and new comers.

Wyoming is still "The West At It's Best".

We had 5 days in WY with a tour group, not nearly enough! We plan to visit again on our own and really explore the entire state. We're checking out buying an RV to allow us to really explore the western states. The WY area and related states are incredibly beautiful and populated by very friendly folks. We look forward to visiting often.

Before you go to the trouble and expense of a RV and find out you might now like it, you might think about renting an RV for a couple of weeks. That would give you a better idea before a major purchase like that.

You are right. 5 days didn't do it justice.

That is good advice, fortunately my spouse has owned 5 RVs in her previous life (pre-me ) and the possibility is attractive in that it makes life simpler traveling with our "kids" (2 poodles who own us; please don't think we're yuppies. I grew up with hounds and mutts, but the wife was a championship dog breeder and choose poodles as our travel companions. A wise man doesn't disagree with a determined woman. I did insist that we get Marine Corps sweaters for them in respect to my background as a Nam Vet, I'm a wimp of sorts but a happy wife makes for a happy life ) . We're also looking at house swapping as an initial step. Surprisingly to us, our home is somewhat desirable for folks who want to do the Washington, DC/Cheassapeake Bay/ Gettysburg/Baltimore/Ocean City/quick run to NY city and Boston areas. It looks very promising for us to swap homes with some western folks who want to visit the east coast. Its been amazing to us to realize how huge the US really is (dumb thing to say, but its true for us). We bop around Europe and can literally hit several countries in a long day. In America, especially the west, its amazing how huge the areas are. The founding settlers of the West had to be a very special breed. We were very appreciative of the genuine sense of hospitality we experienced throughout our tour. Wyoming is a very special place and we hope to enjoy visits to it for many years.

Great, at least your not going into it blind. The old company I worked for sent me all over the country so I lived in a 37ft 5th wheel for almost 9 years.

Wyoming has excellent "FREE" rv parking all over the place. Plus, state sites that are extremely cheap. Problem with the free spaces is that they are one night only. But that's ok when your headed down the road.

Do they still allow free camping in WY city parks? I did that many summers in the 60's - 80's - Buffalo was the only place we got ran out of (only because we were on motorcycles, which they had specifically prohibited). The last WYO city park I stayed was in Powell in 2004 when I was hauling a corpse to NE for burial. It was a swell park, I just pulled in after dark to keep the suspicion down . Enjoyed the Pancake breakfast the next morning, hosted by the Elks or Moose or some other wild game men's group.

The Lusk Plunge was a welcome relief from the hot pavement, back in the olden days. Nap under the shade trees till dusk, then 'hit the road' and watch out for BIG game (and a few 'free range' cattle.)
