Beginning the week of May 9, York County officials will mail the latest assessments to property owners. The notices only contain a property's value. The tax bills won't be determined until the fall, after local governments and schools set their tax rate.
If you are not happy with your assessment you have 90 days from the date of the notice to contest the value.

I just looked up my tax value online and my tax value went down $25K! Not sure if this is a good thing or bad....
I think it can be bad, if you plan to sell your house any time soon.
I sold my house, and we used the tax assessed value, to show it was worth what we were asking. In theory, the tax office should want the value of your home to go up, so your tax bill will be higher.
Of course they use all sorts of calculators to arrive at the number so no cheating, I guess.
Any local real estate agent, will gladly tell you, for no charge, how tax assessed value can affect the listing price, if any.
If you never plan to sell, then take the reduction you are getting.
Unless there was some math error, and they find it later on.
Anyone have experience contesting their values... good or bad experiences... that they could share?
My land value went down, as it should have. It was WAY over inflated. But my building value went up! Ridiculous in my estimation, since it was only assessed 10 months ago and now goes up 5%??? I am thinking about contesting, but have heard horror stories from people in Mecklenberg and Union Counties who contested and then had their values go UP because they contested them.

I am not planning on selling anytime soon, so hopefully it won't affect me. I guess since the value went down, so will my tax payments...which is a good thing. I just hope that it doesn't affect me if I want to sell 10 years down the road...
The State of SC law requires each county to reassess real property every five years. They will give counties a one year extension. York County took the one year extension as our property was suppose to be reassessed last year (2010.) I think our property values would have been lower last year but the York County Council presented the one year delay as a benefit to the property owners.
A house that I am under contract to purchase (should have closed 4/29 but have to wait until the hail damage is finished according to the lender) went up $40k. Thats about $30 a month in taxes!
FWIW, it is also assessed at $74K above what I paid and $66K above what it was appraised at. It is also $66K above the most that it was EVER sold for. (its 8 years old)
I am going to be contesting this, obviously. This is typical of my luck, especially on this purchase. We likely wont close until the 90 day contesting deadline has passed - that would be the kicker.
