We have people at our Church who got a low cost cell phone plan at Sears of all places.

Consumer Cellular.

The brochure of the coverage map looks pretty solid compared to say Verizon.

https://www.consumercellular.com/Home/CoverageMap

Anyone tried it?

When my wife had her CONTRACT run out with verizon 2 years ago I got her a new phone and switched to consumer cellular. It is much cheaper(aprox 25 a month) They have several plans and can do anything the high buck contract only scammers..can...Wish I would have switched years ago. I highly recommend them Oh yea for those who say they have limited coverage areas, they evidently dont know that the same cell phone towers are used by verizon. If you want to you can stop the service at any time and not be charged a penalty and be scammed.Who in the world needs to sign a legal long term contract just to have a frigging phone? Morons do I guess At sears you dont get an "upsale" double talk from some zombie either.

I did a quick on-line search of them and they use SIM cards in their phones which means that it's the same coverage as AT&T and not Verizon. Still, sounds like a good deal. The only complaint I read was from people trying to port over their existing phone # over to the new service. AT&T's coverage isn't as good as Verizon's but it's gotten very close over the years.

Also, since it uses a SIM card it uses GSM technology and you can't use an old phone from Verizon (CDMA technology). Some Verizon phones use GSM technology (they switch between GSM and CDMA) but they lock them down so that you can only use them on their network here in the US.

So, if you don't mind using one of their phones and not transferring what you have over sounds like a great deal.

We moved from Verizon to AT&T, and we're happier with AT&T's coverage, which Consumer Cellular is said to use

I don't know, we were with Alltel for years and was very happy with them. Verizon bought them and that is how we ended up with Verizon. It's hubby's phone, I don't have one. Did you talk to your church people, do they like Consumer Cellular? On paper it doesn't look like a bad deal.

Could I ask one question, in TV shows people have or purchase "burner phones" to use (of course it's for nefarious deeds most of the time.) Then the phones are used and thrown away. What is this? Can the phone be used right then? Who is the service provider? Does it have X number of minutes on it and a phone number?
