Anyone driven up to NYC from here? My needs to go to NYC this Friday, but since it is a last minute trip, the airfare is very expensive for 2 adults. I have a baby, but she is free since only 9 months old.

Just wondering if anyone has driven all the way up there? Is the drive reasonable? Thank you.

Best bet is 77 to 81 to 78 (making sure that you don't try 77 north mid morning ).

85 to 95 is shorter, but there's more traffic, construction, traffic camera's (especially in MD), and tolls, tolls, tolls!

I second not taking 95! I can not stand that particular stretch of road. Good luck! It isn't a terribly unreasonable drive and sometimes very pretty. Now try driving from Austin, Texas to Newburgh, New York. Not fun!

I've done it many times. The best way is 77 to 81 to 78. Its a long 11 hour ride

Ditto. Ive done it to CT about a dozen times. 77 to 81 to 78 is so boring, you will wanna tear your eye balls out, but, its the fastest. Be sure to stop for gas first in SC, then in Roanoke (exit 150) then try and hold your gas till exit 8 off I-78 in NJ. Then its a matter of how you want to get into the city from there. Have a specific destination? Ive been to NYC quite a bit via car.

85 to 95, also boring until Richmond. If you do the drive at night and not on a weekday, you can get there faster. The key is to avoid traffic going to work, so, hitting DC at 6am on a Thursday is AWFUL. Also, the highway is quite confusing in that area. Its do-able, but, tolls galore and the risk of traffic sucks.

Is it me, or is the stretch from Roanoke to CLT the worst part of the trip?

I agree with everyone about taking 77N - 81N - 78E. I am from NYC and we drive up a few times a year and that's the way we go. If you leave early in the morning (around 6-7am) after a full night sleep, it should be a fairly easy drive and you should arrive there around 5-6pm. Don't forget to fill up in NJ before entering NYC...gas is way cheaper there!

Did you check our the Megabus. It goes from Charlotte to DC and then you have to change DC to NY. I have read several posts in the Charlotte forum from people that have used this means of transportation. With gasoline so high it might be worth a look.

Of course I do realize there have been quite a few bus accidents recently but it appears to be the ones going to China Town.

I have never been on a bus but I understand this group doesn't stop at every berg along the way with long layovers but apparently are straight through.

Tied with Wytheville to Winchester, and I-81 PA to the NJ line on 78. I think the Wytheville to CLT is the worst because you think your so close to home, and its another 2.5 hours.

Ive done the Amtrak train from CLT to NYC. It took 12 hrs and is quite nice. I cant sleep on the train, so, that sucked, as most everyone was knocked out. Id recommend that if gas keeps going up.

Agreed.

Then the drive through PA is a killer too...Before going through the nightmare that is the Cross Bronx, or the Belt, we stop at a great NJ diner (probably one of the very best out there):

Clinton Station Diner
