Remarks: ID BY SMITHSONIAN. NO WILDLIFE REMAINS FOUND IN SAMPLE. PILOT SAID IT APPEARED TO BE A GULL. (DATA ENTRY NOTE: ARPT REPTD INDICATED 300 FT AGL AT APCH END OF RWY 6, CAPT'S REPT SHOWD 0' AGL). DAL 2291 WAS WARNED THAT RWY WAS UNSAFE DUE TO BIRDS. FLT DEPTD THEN DECLARED EMERGENCY 5 NE GRB DUE TO VIBRATION IN #2 ENG. RETD AND LANDED W/O INCIDENT. CAPT REPTD SIGNIFICANT DMG TO THE #2 ENG INCLUDING DAMAGE TO FIRST STAGE FAN BLADES AND TO COWL INTERIOR. A TIP OF A FAN BLADE BROKE OFF THEN TOOK SMALL PIECES OUT OF THE LEADING EDGE OF A COUPLE OF OTHER BLADES RESULTING IN CUTS/NICKS ON SOME MORE. ENG MANU WOULD NOT CALL THIS SIGNIFICANT DMG FROM A SAFETY STANDPOINT. A SML METAL OBJECT WAS FOUND NEAR THE BIRD REMAINS. IT LOOKED LIKE IT MIGHT HAVE COME FROM A FAN BLADE. ARPT LOG ALSO REMAKRED THAT THE FLT WAS ADVISED OF GULLS. ONE OF THE BIRDS SEEN ON THE RWY FLEW AWAY. ENGINE WAS REMOVED & REPLACED.
