Joseph Phelps Vineyards

In the 1960's, Joseph Phelps, who owned a construction company, worked to build the Souverain Winery near St. Helena. He became enamored by the area and made a career change by starting a winery. He bought the 600-acre Connolly ranch nearby and started planting vineyards. By 1974 Phelps had finished the construction of his winery, produced his first wine (a Syrah), and created his first insignia. Today this winery produces dozens of wines. His first wine is known today as one of the world's greatest. In 2002 Wine Spectator Magazine named Joseph Phelps Vineyard wine as "Wine of the Year."

All visits to the Joseph Phelps Vineyards require an appointment. They offer Terrace Tastings, seminars, or private tastings. Patrons should call 800-707-5789 or (707) 967-3720 to make a reservation. The Terrace Tasting is a more casual setting for groups of up to six and. It is held on the terrace or indoors (during inclement weather) and includes samples of approximately six wines. The Terrace Tastings are generally offered daily from 10:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

The vineyard is located about 45 minutes by car north of Vallejo, CA in Napa Valley. Visitors interested in sightseeing in the surrounding areas can also enjoy a number of additional wineries, Hall's Visitor Center, Silverado Museum, and the Charles Schulz Museum.
