Monterey Museum of Art


The Monterey Museum of Art on 559 Pacific Street in Monterey, California is housed in a three story landmark building. It is across from historic Colton Hall in downtown Old Monterey. The museum has eight galleries with various exhibitions such as paintings, photography, and contemporary art all dealing with California, its history, and coast. There is an art reference library, gift shop, and occasional events. Hours of operation include Wednesday through Saturday 11am to 5pm, and Sunday 1pm to 4pm. The museum is not open Monday or Tuesday, as well as holidays. Admission is $5 for adults and $2.50 for military and students. Children 12 and under are free.

As an entity protecting, preserving, and collecting art from the 19th century to the present, the Monterey Museum of Art has permanent and temporary exhibits. Some of the collections include the Early California Painting, which was done by William Ritschel in 1925. It shows Mammoth Cove off the coast of Monterey. Another collection is photography by Michael Kenna. Some of the prints include Acacia Tree and Elkhorn Slough.

Asian Art from Katsushika Hokusai and American Art by Rockwell Kent are also on display at the museum in the permanent collection.
