The Nevada Theatre

The Nevada Theatre was established in 1865 in Nevada City, California. It is California's oldest original use theater. The theater is located downtown in the old gold mining town. It is considered California Landmark 863. It has shown thousands of performances over its almost 150 year history. Performances from Market Twain and Emma have been done on the stage. Motley Crue and the Second City comedy troupe have also taken the stage. This community theater offers live performances, movies, and special events.

Nevada City was threatened in a fire of 1863. The fire took out the Bailey House Hotel and a few other buildings. Instead of rebuilding the hotel, the community used the land and a few bricks from the hotel in order to build the Nevada Theatre at Broad and Bridge Streets. In 1909 the theater was remodeled into a movie house. It lasted as a movie theater until the 1950s, when it was closed. In 1963 it was opened again under the direction of the Nevada County Liberal Arts Commission. Main stage products include LeGacy concepts, The Nevada Theater Film Series, and the Community Asian Theater of the Sierras performances. Poetry readings, weddings, graduations, and much more have been performed on the 3 century old stage.
