Yolo County Historical Museum

The Yolo County Historical Museum is located in the Gibson House, the former home of William Byas Gibson purchased by Yolo County in 1975 for the purpose of creating the museum. The historical society took ownership of the house and the two acres surrounding the home that were, at the time, overgrown, uncared for and deteriorating. The home and grounds have been restored and now offer a location where visitors can learn about the history of Yolo, see furnishing and artifacts from the 1850s through the 1930's and enjoy a variety of changing exhibits. Touring the house is a great way to view a rural farmstead from history and enjoy lectures, exhibits and demonstrations from a variety of time periods in history. School tours are available or individuals can visit and tour the museum. The museum offers the Gibson Museum Educational Program for third graders and their families. During the tour, visitors can make butter, wash clothes with a bucket and hand wringer and explore the home and grounds. The Gibson House is located on the National Register of Historic Places and is Yolo County's only historic home open for public visits. The combined efforts of school docents and garden volunteers keep the home in good shape and help educate the public.
