Officer Louis Niederschulte was shot and killed August 12, 1919, when he and another officer responded to a house on Second street to investigate reports of shots being fired.
The suspect had become upset because another man had become friendly with his wife. When he was unable to find the man he began taking shots at other citizens.
Niederschulte and the other officer entered the backyard to search for the suspect and the man opened fire striking Niederschulte in the back. The suspect was later apprehended and sentenced to life in prison.

On June 13, 1919, Officer Thomas Ward and Officer Smith were shot after responding to the scene of an armed robbery on Meramec street.
A passerby had alerted the officers to the robbery and several officers surrounded the building.
As the robbers came out an intense shootout erupted. The getaway driver fled the scene leaving behind the three robbers. The armed men took refuge in the basement of a house on Minnesota street. As officers attempted to surround the house, both Smith and Ward were shot.
Ward died the next day and Smith one month later. The three men were captured and convicted of murder. Two got life and the other got 30 years.
