On April 26, 1946, Police Officer Neal Courtney was stabbed to death by a 71-year-old vagrant near a vacant lot in the 1500 block of North Broadway.
Officer Courtney had instructed the man to extinguish a small campfire the man had set. When the man refused, Courtney began to put it out with his foot.
The man picked up a burning stick and struck Courtney in the face. After a short pursuit, a struggle ensued and the man pulled a small pocket knife and stabbed the officer numerous times in the face and neck, severing his jugular vein.
The suspect was apprehended by a watchman who witnessed the incident. He was found not guilty by reason of insanity and placed in a mental institution.

Police Officer Thomas Mulrooney died April 20, 1956, from a gunshot wound he sustained a month earlier when he interrupted a robbery at a local tavern at the intersection of Ninth street and Mullanphy street.
He and his partner noticed a car with an open door in front of the tavern. The officers closed the door and then went inside to tell the owner.
As they entered two suspects were in the process of robbing the place and yelled at the officers to stop. Mulrooney ran at the suspect as he opened his raincoat to get his revolver.
During a struggle the suspect's shotgun discharged, striking Mulrooney in the upper thigh. Both suspects fled but were later captured.
Mulrooney lingered for a month before contracting blood poisoning and then passing away.
Both suspects were convicted of murder and sentenced to life. One was paroled in 1974 and that year he was shot and killed by a customer he was trying to rob in a restaurant.
