Take a trip into former years and recall what has been lost, what has been gained, some of it good, some of it not so good. History is for remembering and reminiscing, bringing a smile to the old, and a glimmer of light to the young on how things used to be.

Included are recipes, some passed down through generations, and some new, and some not so new.

School Days versus School Daze

Posted 10-27-2011 at 05:19 PM by Yokie

Remember when every school day opened with the Pledge of Allegiance and prayer. My family moved around a lot and every school I went to started with the pledge and prayer. One school I went to also included a Bible reading.

The worst "crime" I ever saw in public school back in the 1940s was the "crime" of bringing a pea-shooter to school. Pea shooters consisted of a bag of split peas (the ammunition) and an ordinary drinking straw or something very similar.

The other forbidden weapon used to be a slingshot.

Spitballs were popular, but the culprit usually got caught and sent to the principal's office.

What followed generally ended up in a note being sent home to the parent or parents with the condition that it be returned signed by the parent.

Upon reading the note, said parent or parents doled out more punishment at home and did not even entertain the idea of blaming the teacher or visiting the school board with a complaint.

IN the public schools I attended, each child had a desk and chair assigned, and each desk and chair unit was securely fastened to the floor. There was a bar that connected the desk to the chair. This bar was on the floor, and the correct way to sit was with each foot on each side of the bar.

These desks had a slightly slant top surface that could be lifted to reveal a storage area for books and papers.

The desk also had an inkwell and a special groove on top to keep pens and pencils.

Ink was not used in the first grade, but was used starting in the second grade. Each pen had a nib inserted into the handle, and the nib was dipped in the ink and then used to write with -- very messy! No one was happier to see the advent of ball-point pens in later years than I was!

    You are going waaaaay back

Luckily I was born when the ball point pen was perfected and introduced, though, we werent allowed to 'use' them, it was always the number 2 standard pencil for everyone.

Calculators werent to be introduced for another 30+ years or so, thus, we had to do it the 'long way', learning our Times Tables and all that, (which Im betting, not one kid knows today!-->personally, I HATED learning that, and my Father took months drilling it into me, til I did, sheesh, but, Im glad he did, cause I still retain it all).

I dont know if technology is all that great, as we had smart kids who 'had' to work with thier minds and hands, instead of pushing buttons on a keypad to get thier answers, with out any thought, except to put the right number in, where needed.

And, like you, the pledge was said, and bible readings werre first introduced to me when I was in the first couple of grades, then dropped for some unknown reason, (this was Public School).
Im thinking it was, because of the Jewish Teacher we had, she had us learning about her Religion, giving us matzo bread, bringing the dweedle in to show us and various other things, except read us the torah. But, she 'did' show us, what one looked like

    I wish you well...
