Young Proffesionals Moving to a New City: Its just College Orientation All Over Again.

Posted 11-18-2013 at 02:53 PM by ColaClemsonFan11

Its never easy for young professionals to move to a new city without having a big group of friends and while starting over or building on what you have accomplished is exciting, not having good friends around you be very difficult for the first little while.

Though you may be bored and miss all of your good firends you left back in college, you dont have to accept yourself as a loner just yet. As someone who went through this a little over a year ago, I realized that you have to be proactive if you have any chance in enjoying where you are and finding yourself some post grad friends and you'll realize very quickly depending on where you are, that you are not alone. So with that being said, here are a few things I would recommend if you are in this situation:

1. Live in a place you will see others your age.
When you are looking where to live, check out what places have community events, if younger I would recommend popular apartments that have socials, pools, etc. It is much more easier to get to know your neighbors in these places, thus giving you a great opportunity to make friends.

2. Find groups to join/ get involved with.
In most cities there are an abundance of network groups, young professional groups, business clubs, etc. All of these groups are designed for those new to the area looking to meet people and can usually be found via social media or even around your office. If nothing like that exists in your city, look at other groups or organizations that appeal to you like a hiking club, or local alumni club from your university. All of these groups are the Fraternities and Sororities of the post grad world and are always looking for new people to join them and very welcoming to newcomers.

3. Your Not the only Newbie that doesn't know anyone!
As the title of this entry states, this is just freshman orientation, only when were older. When we were in college, we had no fear meeting our classmates because we knew everyone was new to each other and no one knew anyone else so we had nothing to loose so we met everyone and all became best friends. This is nothing different when you move to a new city either, especially one with many jobs. I cant tell you how many people I come across that just moved here and are looking to meet people and if you can realize that and treat this like you did freshman year of college, not only will you enjoy yourself more, but you will have a better chance of staying in that place for a much longer period to come.

Of course with everyone having a different situation this will not always work for everyone, but I hope this information can be of some assistance to you and make your moving to a new city much better!
