Another successful Masters for Augusta but can it be more successful with more creativity

Posted 04-11-2016 at 10:19 PM by therealpattman

I have been an avid believer for years now that the city of Augusta lacks the ideal creativity to propel an international event like the Masters and subsequently the city itself to the next level in entertainment. I look at our big younger sister Atlanta as example of maximizing its assets. If the Masters was located in Atlanta it would probably be in the league of the Superbowl each and every year. The Augusta National Golf Course is worshipped as probably the most famous golf course in the world. People from all over the world come to Augusta to see the tournament and millions yes millions more watch the tournament on television, so my question is why does it seem like the tournament is so limited or better question is, is the city's lack of creativity hindering the growth of the tournament? I used the Atlanta example as an extreme measurement as to the potential of the event, now many factors have to be taken into consideration, namely infrastructure and the fact that Atlanta is served by the world's busiest airport. Atlanta as a city is on a much greater level when it comes to "hosting a party". The city is hip and has the aasets to support large events but more so the city has leaders that are creative and ambitious taking ever chance to showcase the city and gain another corporation. Augusta does not have these types of leaders. Of course money is always an issue , but progressive leaders find ways around money or better yet find ways to pay for projects with using much taxpayer funds. Look at the situation with new Atlanta Falcons stadium, Arthur Blank the teams owner is basically footing most of bill himself with the hotel tax taking care of a pre agreed amount so that means that unless you stay at a hotel you won't be paying for this stadium, crazy right. Now in Augusta there are very few people with the kind of money needed to do something that ambitious so of course taxpayers will have to make an initial sacrifice to at least get the idea off the ground but something needs to be done to finally maximum this world class event.

My Idea
Decades ago Washington Road was the main corridor used to connect downtown and then rural Columbia County, fast foward to now an the road is still used in the same capacity even though Riverwatch Parkway was constructed to serve this function. The city also does a poor job at maintaining a standard when it comes to building codes meaning businesses are not held to a stand when it comes to the up keep of their properties see Regency Mall for an extreme example of this but that is for another blog. If you travel on Washington Road it is pretty evident the city has not invested much into the road. Now for what I believe needs to happen to the road. First thru traffic needs to be routed onto Riverwatch as it was intended. Washington Road needs to be widened to include a landscaped median where statutes of its founding fathers and legends overlook certain points on the road, you can add benches so that it in itself acts as a memorial and hall of fame. I would add a large joint running and bike trail along the entirety of Washington Road which would come especially in hand when dealing with Masters patrons. I would do away with the whold strip mall look on the road, holding those stores to high standards while creating a plazza to limit the amount of stores have to direct access to Washington Road. I would also fill the street with a combination of mixed use development and retail that have a specific theme that is tasteful. Lastly I would submerge all of the powerlines on the road and replace them with simple lighting fixtures. I have more ideas and thoughts coming in the next few days.
