Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

False Signs? AASHTO Says No Go On Interstate 14

Posted 07-17-2016 at 07:03 PM by case44

I never really thought this would work. This thing about connecting the U.S. forts and military bases with one interstate just wouldn't fly. So, the folks at AASHTO have had their say. U.S. Highway 190 in Killeen, Texas will not see any Interstate 14 signs anytime soon. Actually, ever. Traffic counts would be too low over the road's route, specifically in West Texas.

The idea was doomed from the beginning for what I believe is this reason: There are no real large cities to connect together for any traffic to be significant for I-14 to get going. Oh, TXDOT put in the request for the interstate, but AASHTO poo-pooed it. Not enough traffic. And that's not only in Texas, but also Louisiana and Mississippi, as well. Never mind that there are no federal funds for this; that's just not going to happen. The only official word I've seen so far is on I-14's Facebook page. I couldn't get AASHTO's page to come up, but I believe the word given from the coalition. If it's not going to happen, then it isn't.

Cancel the new signage, boys. The focus will have to reshift to the roads already being built in the I-69 network in Texas. But this latest escapade allows me to revisit an idea which I shared some years ago. And I might call this project I-14 like I did originally. It was a proposed link from Lubbock to Abilene to Austin to Houston. Such could still work if our minds get onto this. Yes, I know; Congress has already designated U.S. 190 for a corridor, but maybe we can convince them to change their minds.

Just to clarify on this subject: I'm not against connecting military bases with a single interstate. Not at all. It's just that you don't have large cities in the proposed route (Montgomery, Alabama, being the largest in a sea of smaller cities). That put them at a disadvantage. But connecting all the bases, well, that's a great idea if you're transporting things that are heavy.
