Really-Snakes?

Posted 09-08-2017 at 08:07 AM by snowduck

Matthew 10:16 - “I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves.- When someone is studying Christianity, or is forming an opinion of it, they might be turned off by this scripture. The innocent as doves part Christ talks about here is understandable, but some might find it a little weird when he says to be as shrewd as snakes, after all the Bible doesn't say many good things about snakes. But upon more careful reading, it becomes clearer. He's not saying to take on all the features of snakes, just their shrewdness. I think that sometimes being shrewd is a necessity when Christians go out into the world where they often encounter unbelievers and false prophets who can be anywhere. It needs to be remembered that Christ used many teachable moments when he spoke, and I think this was one of them. Among the greatest things he said was “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me"(John 14:6). Jesus didn't say I'm one of the ways or I think I'm the way, he said "I am THE way". He left his heavenly kingdom (John 1:1) and came here to save us from any sin we've ever committed even though we have most of the features of snakes. What About Jesus?
