Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

When A Radio Host Just Isn't Into It For A Friday

Posted 08-12-2022 at 04:38 PM by case44

It's quite stunning that an imperfect radio host can't get his weekly Friday tradition right. My first thought is, "Why even bother?"

Okay, forgive my annoying attention to detail, and the guy I'm about to talk about is really a good guy and has excellent intentions. He really does. And, no, he hasn't spent his entire life in radio, but tries as hard as he can to put on as good of a show as he can. Many shows have certain traditions, and what I'm about to share is no exception.

You see, on Fridays, Houston radio host Michael Berry has his usual serious takes on his three-hour morning show, with strains of "Oh, Happy Day" by the Edwin Hawkins Singers providing the theme for it in lieu of his usual Elvis Presley "See See Rider" open and close. When we get to his other outlet, an afternoon, two-hour effort, his theme for that opening is Blackberry Smoke's "Good One Comin' On". Today's late-afternoon show, I have to confess, was the worst one I'd ever experienced. What is Michael thinking about sometimes? If things did not go well for his opening set, then he shouldn't have gone a rambling diatribe that made him sound like he's drunk. His board operator, known as Ramon, has to be one of the densest people in the radio genre. His theme song somehow had gotten cut off by the flagship affiliate (KTRH-AM 740), and throwing the beginning of his show completely off. Those usual traditions I just spoke of, my goodness, have been pushed aside. Today, he had time constraint issues, and, thus, he couldn't get his "Week in Review" into his now-lost first segment. Now, he's in his second segment, where he has to get caught up, and what happens? Michael Berry takes a dadgummed phone call, and it's from a listener who is a confused leftist who isn't even sure of himself. Berry then goes on another diatribe after the two-minute call ends. He misses another chance at the "Week in Review" and even get to his weekly "Pop A Top" segment where he salutes people who do good things for society. Already, it's the bottom of the first hour, and Michael Berry has accomplished nothing on this Friday. And the aforementioned Ramon? Terrible board operator who can't even remind his host that he's forgotten to do this or that. That's what the damned commercial break is for. Traditions? Guess that idea's lost here.

~Sigh~ I'm sorry, folks. Something's really wrong with this radio host. He does go on tangents way too much on his show and doesn't handle his time constraints well whenever he has guests. This Friday drive show that Michael Berry does is starting to get painful to listen to.

Oh, well. There are other channels and other hosts.
