My Daily Life and Thoughts while in San Diego | List of Best Posts
This blog is where I express myself to the world or at least to those who might stop by to read what I post . Maybe God will use what I post (I am a Christian and this blog will have a most decidedly Christian bent to it) to good effect in the lives of my readers.

I may turn some of my posts into a book. I may cease blogging here altogether. Who knows. But for now..I am content to post away in this, my own little corner of the world.

Rather than reading through my now lengthy list of posts you may wish to read what I consider to be my very best posts or you can just read the posts that deal with a single subject category that might interest you.

Please know that I am open to any input on any topic I write about. If you have something to say about anything you see written here please....feel free to speak up in the form of leaving a comment or sending me a PM (private message).

And if you are in San Diego and wish to meet the one and only Carlos (that's me )...drop me a private message. I always enjoy meeting one of my readers!

Thanks.

Carlos

A better Google than...well...Google :)...

Oftentimes I get frustrated with searches I do on Google. Many searches produce tons of pages that have either nothing to do with the subject I am looking to find out about or the pages that show up, while being somewhat relevant, are not very in depth or otherwise useful.

So...I have to keep refining the search using search tricks to produce more relevant search results (such as adding "- something" to the search phrase to weed out search results that show up that I have no interest in at all). Or I have to keep refining the search phrase until I somehow hit upon something Google recognizes such that I finally get some really useful web sites that show up in the search results.

For example the phrase "using 1px images as backgrounds on web pages" causes all kinds of web pages to be returned that have nothing to do with what I am looking for.

Among the search results that show up are pages having to do with how to protect your web images, 1px alignment background bugs, how to set a background with CSS, and even a page about the most successful web page hoaxes (presumably using 1px images)!

None of which lead me to understand how to both create and use 1px images to create tiling backgrounds on web pages! So I have to do what I usually do and start refining my search phrase. Rather frustrating.

Well...there's a better way!

Google has uploaded a bunch of books and previews of books to the books.google.com site. And these books are searchable!

So if I enter "using 1px images as backgrounds on web pages" into the search box at books.google.com I get much more relevant and in depth results!

Among those that show up are snippets of books The Complete Idiots Guide to Creating a Web Page and Professional Web Design both of which are much more relevant to what I am looking for than regular Google searches.

So...if you find yourself getting frustrated with regular Google searches you might try searching for the same phrase at books.google.com.

The search results are not always better than regular Google searches mind you but oftentimes they are. Enough to make me want to use books.google.com as my first search engine destination for any kind of compound word search phrase which might have a book written around it's subject.

A better Google than...well...Google .
