Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

Even More Scattershooting / That Sultry Texas Heat

Greetings and a big "Howdy" to all of you good readers once again, while we go all over the place once again on Case's Column. While you're doing that, go grab you a cold one out of the fridge, because we've got to stay cool.

It is August in the state of Texas. To a lot of people, that only means one thing: It's so freaking hot out there! We've got more storylines than a Tennessee Williams play. The air conditioning is cranked up in the house even though I've got ceiling fans going at nearly the maximum speed. And around my corner of the world, we've had heat, but there's more coming. You'll still see me posting in the Weather forums the latest temperature and my account of the forecast. Amazingly, no triple-digit temps are in the offing, but then, we won't be feeling the difference, anyway. I've got the chilled Ozarka bottles and the Classic Coke bottles in the fridge, so I'm as ready as ever.

And it doesn't hurt to have the AC working full throttle in the car.

Usually, when I listen to KVET Country Gold on my computer on Saturdays, I agree with Tom Allen's opinions. Well, there was one this morning which I didn't. He played a song by Jeannie C Riley (Harper Valley PTA) that was her biggest hit ever. After he played it, he said that she was a one-hit wonder. Well, after looking it up in Joel Whitburn's Billboard Book of Country Top 40 hits, I'd have to disagree. Riley made the country charts 14 times, with 7 of her songs making the top ten. That track record does not a one-hit wonder make. Sorry, Tom.

Injecting some rare sports news into my blog, my Houston Astros have yet to really begin their usual second-half tear in MLB like they have in past seasons. They are only five games back of the Cardinals in the NL Central at the time of this writing. Maybe they can still get it going.

That's it. I'm attempting to go potato-free for a while. I love potatoes, but I'm deciding to give them up for a little while. So, when I cook my filet mignon sometime tomorrow afternoon (Sunday, the 9th at this writing), my two sides will be asparagus and barbecue beans. No baked potato sightings around my apartment and no spud-shaped critters lurking about.

Can you believe it is almost time for kiddos all over America to go back to school? Just a few more weeks and school zones everywhere will be flashing once again, so be prepared to slow down, folks.

And our word of the day is lotion. Apply dabs of lotion on you when you sunbathe or go swimming, especially those of you who live in Texas and have to deal with this hot heat. You want as much protection as possible.

And there you are.

Speaking of country music, Don't forget that we'll be hearing Hank Williams discussing the Colts, Cowboys, Chargers, etc. in a few weeks on Mondays. And then on Saturday mornings Big & Rich will be singing (canned) at various college towns. I've already started imagining the leaves blowing in the north wind while watching oblong-shaped objects try to defy it. Anyway, I can't wait...

I didn't think Hank, Jr was still doing that since MNF's move to ESPN.

August in Texas is like the desert is to S. California...you have to pass through it to get to the interesting parts (though some might find the California desert interesting). Jmo.

Of course in a few weeks, I'll be on the beach in S. California, and then I'll come home to football, so I guess things aren't so bad here in the somewhat desertified patch of Texas.

I'm not complaining one bit. You couldn't pay me to live up in the frozen North.

Yeah, I agree. I have relatives from Minnesota (apologies to certain people) who moved out as fast as they could mainly because of that. I don't mind cold snaps and 20-degree weather (it kills mosquitoes and other pests), I just don't want -20 for three straight weeks.
