Before this change you needed 100 reputation points to get a new box, now it's enough to get 50. We now have more flexibility to define these settings (they were hardcoded before).
I'm still making some adjustments. The first dark-green box is the default one. The following ones are gained for 50 reputation points. The light green box is worth 75 reputation points. After that, there is a golden box that's worth 100 reputation points. All these values are subject to changes...
What exactly are reputation points? I've never used them. Do you win a prize or something once you have a certain amount? Should I start doing something with the points? Is there a way to check who left you a rep point and for what?

Reputation is exactly that. People with higher reputation might be seen as people who give out good advice to others, or are knowledgeable in some other sense.
People with low reputation might be not as knowledgeable or may give bad information.
There are other factors with this as well:
How long you've been a member.
How many posts you have.(This is just a kind of)
And joining.
The first one, most the times the longer you've been a member the more reputation you might have.
The second one is just a kind of, if you have 300 posts that just means you have that many more chances for someone reading a post of yours to give you positive reputation.
The third one. You start with 10 reputation.
And for checking reputation all you have to do is at the top click "My Settings" and it will show you the most recent 10. It use to be lower, but it looks like that has changed as well.
As for what they are for... I hear if you get a million you get a free trip to Disney land! JUSSTTT KIDDING! That's not true don't believe that one. Probably almost gave Administrator a heart attack after that one!
They are there to show your appreciation to what others contribute. To make City-Data a helpful place!

I'm still confused!
I clicked on my settings and it doesn't show me anything about the 10 most recent reps I got. It just shows me all the threads I've subscribed to. I was hoping to see WHO left me a rep point and for which post. Am I missing something?
