I wanted "Bideshi" to unfold who he is... because he's painted himself into a bit of a corner.
He is full of the, "Hell Fire and Brimstone" worn-out slave version of "God," ... yet, if he lies, that metaphysical dynamic will hold him in punishment (psychologically) for his Blasphemy.
The word Bideshi means "foreigner" in the Bengali language of South Asia. Christianity is not commonly practiced in that part of the world and Islam is the dominant religion of the Bengali people. He might actually be Muslim.
Why should it? They are on the higher moral ground. It is our immoral culture that is wrong on homosexuality.

Many African countries are ruled by regimes that are utterly corrupt, undemocratic and immoral. They are NOT on a higher moral ground. To oppress and persecute a blameless minority is heinous to say the least.
Nelson Mandela would not stand for such scapegoating tactics; South Africa was the first African nation to enshrine LGBT rights in it's constitution.

Addiction
Substance abuse is a very spiritual path. It leads you to the bottom and there's a metaphorical "death" that must occur to be "reborn" into sobriety ... and something has to be placed on the alter ... a sacrifice ... the gin bottle or the crack pipe. The entire process requires the building of faith. The addicts' personal psychology undergoes an intense make-over during the first two years of recovery. It doesn't MATTER what happened during addiction because EVERYBODY has a Shadow. (Half the the church population is either addicted to porn or sex or food or something else.)
Behavioral Addiction
Behavioral addictions are even worse than substance addictions. Gambling is one of the most self-destructive things any person can do. The gambler doesn't want to win .. he just wants that next bet because of the chemical reactions going on inside his brain.
