It most certainly does get lake effect. We get it here in the Youngstown area. Just because you aren't in the snow belt doesn't mean you don't get lake effect snow. Everything depends on where those lake effect snow bands go.

"Monday Dec. 6. A cold northwest wind blew over the warm waters of Lake Erie causing bands of heavy lake effect snow to fall across northeastern Ohio. Over the stretch of three days the lake effect snow brought a total of eight and a half inches at the Akron Canton airport according to The National Weather Service. One of the highest snowfall totals was in Kent as they received over 20 inches of snow."

The Akron/Canton airport is located in North Canton.

I can certain appreciate this coming from a geography perspective. And the lake effect snows can be felt as far away as West Virginia.

Clouds form rapidly in cold weather because cold weather can't hold as much moisture, and with the cold air blowing over the lakes, alot of moisture gets picked up. And with the cold temperatures, snow is quite certain.

"lake effect" snow is not ANY different from other snow. It's just snow. There is no point in differentiating it unless you live in a place like the snow belt. The lake effect really dumps on a place like Chardon, OH, not Canton. Canton gets snow. The fact that it came from Canada is insignificant.

It is not about coming from Canada. It is about the fact that the lakes play a big part in it forming. "Lake effect" is called that for a reason. The Great Lakes influence it. The water being so deep it can influence the weather in some ways.

If you have credit issues, and Canton is cheaper, go there. Sounds like a no brainer.

I'm chiming in as a former east coast person.

Since you are renting, rent a full service apartment. From a complex. You may get amenities such as a pool and gym. Utilities will be less. Put some money together to buy a house. Don't rent a handy man. What's good about that?

Again, it's irrelevant! The people impacted most by this kind of snow is in the snow belt. To everyone else, it's just freaking snow!!

It is snow, but the lake effect is the reason there is so much snow. It is not irrelevant to me because I read about meteorological/geographic stuff. This stuff matters to me. And snow from the lakes can travel inland.

I don't get what the argument is about. Yes, the Canton area gets some lake effect snow. But, the amount of snow accumulation Canton gets at any one time, due to lake effect snow is fairly insignificant.

Canton doesn't get that much snow. On average, it gets 25 fewer inches than Cleveland per year. Ashtabula, in the Snow Belt, where the lake effect matters, puts even Cleveland to shame.

Canton: 34.59 inches (Canton, OH Weather)
Cleveland: 59.46 inches (Cleveland, OH Weather)
Ashtabula: 80.80 inches (Ashtabula, OH Weather)
