Are you sure you can handle shoveling a driveway yourself every morning during the winter? Also, do you think this is a good place to meet other suitable singles in the future?

Considering the fact that most of the men in Florida are either 20 something's or 70 year old retiree's...

So compared to Florida, I'd say the answer to your question is yes.

You guys are great! Umm my son lives in Huntington but I really don't mind a drive. It's better than coming from FL and as far as the snow, I'm hoping to find someone to shovel it for me, lol. Just kidding. I'm in no hurry. Still can't decide, been looking at several different places. I wanna be in the country for sure but not too far from the city. Just don't know.

Who shovels??? I never do, just drive over it. The only time you really need to shovel is when we get dumped on so bad that you can't get out of your driveway. I never see anyone shoveling before work and most people have snow blowers, so it's not a big deal.

Who shovels???! CortlandGirl, have you ever lived up on the Lake?

Everywhere from the East side of Cleveland to Ashtabula gets hammered all winter. LOL, maybe Warren only gets dumped on a few times, but Lake and Ashtabula county get absolutely pounded.

And as for snowblowers...waste of money. If fLOHIO71 is smart she will just pay the neighborhood kids $5/week to shovel for her.

Ummm..........well, that's where you're wrong, people immediately on the lake dont get dumped on as bad as the people living a couple miles inland. I live in the secondary snow belt just south of Ashtabula. Most snows here are 1-5 inches at a time. Warren's average per year is about 55 inches. The last few years have seen record snowfalls of 90-100 inches. Most people don't shovel or snow blow around here until they get home from work everyday. Few remove the snow before work unless they work in the afternoon.

How about Wooster, or Medina, OH? There is a Cleveland Clinic branch in Wooster, and several other hospitals nearby in Akron or Strongsville. They are both pleasantly rural but near city amenities.

Well, welcome to Ohio FlOHIO71 if/when you decide to move here. There are a lot of areas in Ohio that would fit your bill (living rural, yet being driving distance to your son). I guess it depends on how far you want the drive to be.

As far as snow and cold is concerned, that also depends on the part of Ohio you move to. NE OH (where I've grown up and lived since 1968 except for two years in S. CA) DOES get snow and ice; the snow isn't constant 24/7, but there are times that the snow keeps coming for a few days or a week and the accumulation builds up. You don't have to shovel or buy a snow blower, you can hire a service to come out and scrape your driveway. This is what I wish we would do every year. Sure, at the beginning of the snow season, the snow melts because the ground isn't frozen yet, but once it turns into an arctic tundra the snow doesn't melt so fast. Also, there remains a layer of ice on the driveway unless that's scraped off or until a warmer spell hits. You also need to familiarize with the term, "black ice" when/if you move here. Also, learn or re-learn how to drive in snow and ice. The first year I moved back from S. CA (after living there a few years in my late teens/early 20's), I had to re-learn how to drive in snow. One morning, I took out my Brady Bunch Station Wagon (winter of 1983) in the snow. As I came to a stop, I put the brakes on as I normally would. The car didn't stop, in fact, it kept going through the stop sign and I was hitting and bouncing from curb to the next curb. Thank God there was no one coming either way because this kept up for about half the length of the street until the car straightened out again. From there on, I learned to slow down before making a stop, pump the brakes, etc. Driving in snow and ice means that you have to be a defensive driver and "anticipate". You seriously need to anticipate your own braking as well as watch what other drivers are doing. Sure, there are people who think they are God's gift to driving and speed up with their oversized SUV. That's all well and good until you see them stuck in some snow drift as you pass by. I guess their dream machine can't handle mother nature as well as they thought.

I don't know anything about people not shoveling out their driveway until they get home from work unless they are driving some very high off-the ground 4-wheel drive vehicles. Maybe those types of vehicles can run over high snow in the driveway and not get stuck, but trust me, normal cars WILL get stuck if the snow is too high. For us, if the snow is bad, school is cancelled for the kids but my husband still needs to get out of the driveway to get to work. Our boys shovel the driveway and in the cold blizzard weather, they take turns two at a time shoveling for 15-20 minutes each and then come back inside. Yes, it's a pain, and there are going to be a few days in the winter when it is a true blizzard and people are cautioned to stay off the roads save for emergency vehicles, police, etc. These are rare, but they do happen. Basically, the real change might be the overcast, gray skies. But since you're wanting to leave FL and start fresh, you probably don't mind it. Sometimes change is good. Good luck.
