How can we know what communities to point you towards if we have no idea what kind of places appeal to you?
I work from home, but my mother-in-law needs access to a good cardiologist. We do enjoy walking several times a week. Walking trails are within the community would be nice. Easy access to grocery stores, restaurant deliveries would be nice. Riding bikes around the area without scary traffic is a plus.
How is that?

That's very helpful.

Based on this, you might actually enjoy living in the Midtown area. It's a very walkable area with easy access to grocery stores and all of the city amenities such as grocery delivery, etc.

Semmes is not a particularly walkable/bikeable area, and I'd be surprised if you could get grocery delivery out there. The University of South Alabama has nature trails and even a mountain bike trail, and it's easily accessible from either Midtown or Semmes.

Hurricanes are going to be a threat in Mobile County, for sure. In general, Mobile doesn't have many walking/hiking trails.

Birmingham is going to be the best area for that.

I'm not real familiar, but we are looking for a bit more yard, 3/4 - acre. Also, aren't some of the less desirable areas bordering Mid-town? I don't know, just going by some comments.
Thanks for your time. Is Semmes a bit more hilly? I'm not looking for Ga. mountains, but the rolling hills are enjoyable.

If you want a bigger yard, then it makes sense to look more outside the city. No, Semmes is not hilly.

Yea you likely won't find a 3/4 acre yard in Midtown. Sorta kinda, West and East of Midtown are not undesirable places (Downtown and the beginning of Suburban West Mobile) but North and South there are transitions into undesirable neighborhoods, but these places are generally starting to Gentrify

You could possibly check out the Hillcrest area, Particularly Between Cottage Hill Rd and Nevius Rd, Walkable part of West Mobile with plenty of shady trees, bigger lots, and barable traffic

Another option that was mentioned is Saraland. How does it compare to Semmes?

Another Suburb of Mobile. Wealthier than Semmes and located along I-65. It is the fastest growing city in the county. Not sure about the walkability of Saraland.

Is flooding an issue there? I noticed the elevation is much lower than Semmes.

I've never heard complaints of flooding from Saraland, Saraland East of I-65 averages 35+ feet so stuff like coastal flooding is very unlikely to happen either. If you still wish for higher elevation, The Celeste Road corridor west of I-65 is where you'll find the higher elevations in Saraland, ranging from about 100 to 200 feet
