I would appreciate any insight that you can offer. We are moving from Ga, looking for a nice, safe community to buy a home.
The home prices in Semmes seem reasonable. What can you tell me about living in Semmes, or the surrounding area? Is it protected enough from hurricanes, or should we look further inland?
We have family in Daphne to Baton Rouge.

Thank you.

My parents live in Semmes. It's above sea level and it's 26 to 30 miles away from Mobile Bay so yes you will be clear from flooding lol. Semmes is quiet it's on the come up. It had a population of around 5k not to long ago. Now it's approaching 20k. It was a small rural community and now they are looking at building a quaint downtown with shopping and restaurants.

Whether or not you will enjoy living in Semmes largely depends on what kind of lifestyle you're looking for.

Hurricanes are always a possibility when living on the Gulf Coast, but Semmes is not any more prone to destruction than any other location.

Semmes is an up and coming suburb of Mobile, one of the newest cities in the Mobile Bay area. It is currently transitioning from a rural community to a suburban community and is still in the process of forming its boundaries so will likely grow much more than it is now. North of West Mobile where all the businesses in West Mobile County are and directly south of Highway 158/future 98 (current 98 runs through Semmes currently) which is a new freeway/highway with quick access to the Interstate System
Fairly quite place like any other suburb. As Portcity said, the city is in the process of building its own Downtown.

The majority of damage caused by hurricanes are caused by storm surge. The average elevation of Semmes is 220-300 feet, so safe to say you'll be fine lol. Semmes is also hilly so flooding is also less of an issue

Thanks everyone. Are there any other communities besides Semmes that we should look at?
We need to be near grocery and pharmacy stores, but avoiding traffic jams is a high priority.

Your posts have been too vague.

We have no idea what kind of lifestyle you are aiming for. Will you have a work commute?

How can we know what communities to point you towards if we have no idea what kind of places appeal to you?

Tillman's corner, West Mobile, and Saraland are other communities you can look at. But might need some more criteria to help you any more than that

Semmes does have a particularly rough intersection. The intersection of current 98 and Schillingers Road is pretty awful. If there was a contest of worst intersection in Mobile County Shillingers/98 would be top contender.

I agree with lifestyle questions because midtown Mobile could be the perfect fit for you or the Dawes area and etc.

We lived in Baton Rouge and hurricane winds were still a constant threat and caused damage regularly. Is Semmes more protected from the winds because of the elevation? What about power outages?

The newer subdivisions in Semmes have underground powerlines.
