How much for tags in Alabama? I looked online and saw $23 with a $50 charge for vehicles over 8k lbs. However, I have relatives paying $250.

The actual tag is around $23 or so, but the variables are school district taxes, cities, counties, etc. The vehicle is appraised and these rates vary with the perceived value of the vehicle. So, a new car/truck could push $300, but an older one could be only $25, the minimum.

It depends on the value of your car. I have a 2021 Audi and a 2013 Cadillac ATS. Plates in August were just below $800, but the Audi was the vast majority of that cost.

I've also heard of those with electric car owners being surprised and irritated when they have to pay several hundred extra dollars when they get their tags (since they didn't pay gasoline tax), and they think it's unfair. Well - they tear up the road just like any other car, possibly more since the batteries typically add several hundred pounds to the weight of the car.

Not sure if it's still that way, but used to when you bought a new car you were exempt from the taxes for the first year. You just paid the tag fee.

So, it would probably be less out in a rural area? Aren't school district and city/county taxes a part of property taxes? This seems confusing lol. In Tennessee I pay $26.50 for my 2021 Camaro and $26.50 for the 2007 Grand Caravan.

Alabama does not have the "wheel tax" Tennessee does when buying a car. Tennessee breaks it off in you in one lump on the front end when you buy a car. Alabama slowly bleeds you over a number of years based on weight class and the current value of the vehicle each year. If you keep cars for a longer period, you will reach a point where your tag is the minimum of around $23 plus a small processing fee or whatever it is. If you are one of those that trades cars every 2 or 3 years, you will constantly be paying the higher rates.

I THINK:
If you’re a new Madison County, Alabama resident you’ll be charged a title fee of $18.75 for each vehicle IIRC and a tag issuance fee somewhere around $25 for each vehicle. When you get your tag bill in the subsequent tax year you’ll pay another tag fee of around $25 plus personal property taxes of up to 5.8% on 20% of whatever the Madison County tax assessor thinks your vehicles are worth. After that it’s rinse and repeat every year.

IF YOU WANT TO BE SURE:
Call the Madison County Tax Collector’s Office. They are very nice people.
