In 2021, the OMB had proposed to change the minimum metropolitan statistical reporting area from 50,000 to 100,000. I guess that didn’t happen since Auburn/Opelika is still on the list.

It was 50k to 100k in the urban area, and they backed off after a lot of backlash. Auburn was threatened by the change, but ultimately passed the threshold anyway.

Birmingham: 774,956
Huntsville: 329,066
Mobile: 321,907
Montgomery: 254,348
Tuscaloosa: 156,450
Auburn: 100,842
---Potential cutoff---
Shoals: 78,925
Anniston: 78,302
Fairhope: 76,807
Dothan: 72,423
Decatur: 60,458
Gadsden: 57,975

The urban area map for Daphne-Fairhope-Spanish Fort is absolutely outdated. The subdivisions along 181 and up 31 are filling out, and it looks like this map from the CB only follows city limits which means nothing when individual subdivisions vote to join or not join a city, or the developer planned it that way before hand. .

Nah I can believe it, there's still empty land between the Eastern Shore and Loxley/Robertsdale, which would add a couple 10's of thousands of people, though that might starting changing by the end of the decade
