I miss easy access to my kids (who are all grown now, but you get my point). Everything else about the lower 48, don't miss it at all.

Oh yes we do, SONIC!!! Some of the waitresses are on roller skates and some are not though...

My husband and kids will be sad to see them go... I won't. I think their food is ghastly... shhh, don't tell the family!

I think the list of what I don't miss is longer than what I do...but on the other hand I've been lucky enough to have the best of both worlds for most of my life.

I haven't been outside for awhile but I know that when I go there this winter I am going to miss the silence and the feeling of inevitability (for lack of a better word) that comes when the first snow sweeps down out of the Alaska Range, when the sky turns steel gray and you know...it's coming... I'll miss the first major snow day when the power is out but still the cabin is warm because we all have stand alone heat sources. I'll miss knowing my neighbor's name. I'll miss the Northern Lights and the stars seeming so close you can damn near reach up and grab them and most of all I will miss that mean old momma moose who used to sunbathe in the path between my front door and my pickup. I'll miss the mornings when it's forty below and the sky is a shade of blue that most people can not even imagine in their wildest dreams and the way the sun rises and sets at the same time and the alpenglow is all around the horizon. I'll miss the moon being out for days.

I will not miss the carpetbaggers and opportunists and those who see Alaska as the new Disneyland ...

but the question was ...the other way around.

Can't answer that one except to say that I miss the smells of early spring and the holiday season with my Oregon family.Y'all can have Wal*Mart and fast so called "food" et al..

but then...it won't be long now until its all here.

I 'miss' not having to pay an arm and a leg for an airplane ticket

From ANY other major US Airport you can get great deals, here, the airline industry knows there is no way any of us is going to get away for vacation's holidays, etc... without paying them FIRST!

As a former Cali gal, I'd say 'In & Out' and Trader Joes, the sounds of big ole pounding surf!

Most of the fast food and big box stores have been in Anchorage for years.

When I lived there in the 90's the airfare to Seattle was cheap on the red-eyes. Don't know if that still exists. Plus, it's only a three hour plane ride, compared to a 3 or 4 day drive! Where else does that exist in the US?

Blueberry take it from one who has lived in the south (Memphis, TN and Lakeview, AR) all her life, all that stuff is overratted. Thunderstorms, are you kidding? I love the thunder and the rain, but the lightning has gotten very nasty over the years , hitting people left and right. And did you see what Texas and Oklahoma just went through? Flooding and people getting killed. Frogs, eewwww! I've never liked them. One thing we all have in common this time of year is mosquitos.

However, I must agree with you about the springs here in the south, cool sunny mornings that don't cook you, low humidity. Ditto about the stary nights and twinkling stars. By the way what is the cemetery capital of the world?

Yes, I know. I was referring to most of the rest of the state. I don't really consider Anchorage when I think/write about Alaska....I just don't spend time there. They're in a few other more populated areas too.
