Like you, have not been to AK yet either, but also in my plans someday. Anyhow visited those areas in PA a few months ago, very scenic, desolate, and wonderful.
I've hiked in the Pine Creek Gorge in the winter. It was a very nice hike and scenic like you said. I'm from Southeastern PA originally and living in Alabama to go to school. I'm also interested in Alaska and like the remoteness, quality of the outdoors, and tranquility. Unfortunately it's not something I've totally found here in Alabama although it is far better than the metro area in which I grew up.

It has everything we love, and a life time to finish exploring.
I lived in AK a short while and am considering a return. Wish it wasn't so far from some of my family, but I'm far from them now anyway, but they are growing... AK just gets into your soul, and like you said... it has everything you love. I think I might miss family - I'm very independent but missed them last time ironically - but there were a couple of deaths and 3 babies born while I was gone. Made a bit of a difference that I didn't really have the choice to be there or not due to the traveling expenses and time it would have taken to get there (too late). Anyway...

Looking at returning possibly this fall - driving the Alcan w/my pup. Not sure I want to put him under the ferry belly for 2 1/2 days from WA up... but it might be driving. Lots to consider.

Any thoughts?

take the ferry unless you just really want to drive. you'll save wear and tear on your car (= $$$), etc. your puppy will not have it that "bad".
book early tho, the schedule is cut in half.

When I'm here I miss Sweden. When I'm in Sweden I miss Alaska. Weird.

Can't say I feel like I'm missing out on anything... but it sure would be nice not to get ripped off by Alaska Airlines.

We need another airline that flies throughout Alaska, the prices would come down a tad.

I think they would come down quite a bit. If the other airline charged reasonable rates and had a similar coverage, AK air would be forced to lower their prices to be competitive.
If there's a guaranteed successful business venture out there, this is it. Yet no one has done it!?
