This isnt really an Alaska related question except that in I want to move there. I wanted to set up some kind of account or something online where family and friends can contribute to our Alaska moving fund, in lieu of gifts and things. We have holidays and birthdays and anniversary coming and wanted our family and friends to be able to help us. Does anyone know of any websites that offer this kind of service or any ideas of how I can do this? Thanks in advance for any information

Just send'm all a tacky note and ask for cash instead of gifts. Be blunt and to the point. Something like this:

Dear Family and Friends:

We are moving to Alaska and leaving the hellhole of the lower 48 behind. As the holiday and birthday season approaches we know some of you will want to buy us another round of unneeded gifts. Instead of buying us junk that we will just have to return please send us cash instead. If your not comfortable with that then gift cards for WalMart, Sportsmans Warehouse or Costco would be appreciated.

You could add your own personal touches to that if you'd like or use it like it is.

Stiff- I really cant tell you how much I adore you! Your replies are always helpful and usually entertaining. Although I do know that asking for money is tacky I was hoping for a bit more tactful way though if I cant find a website where people can use like paypal or their check card I may have to send that delightful note! Thanks!!

I wish I knew of a website. Cause in all honesty cash is sometimes a lot more helpful. I'd probably drop a few hints that gift cards would be appreciated. It's just hard to drop those kinda hints for cash. Good luck!!!

How about something like: We have always appreciated the carefully selected gifts each and everyone of you has given each of us over the years for B'day, Christmas etc.
We are planning our future move to Alaska and are paring down our household to necessary items to take with us. As we cannot take many possession with us we have a special request, we would most appreciate contibutions to our moving fund. You will be making each an every day in Alaska the best gift for us for the rest of our lives...(insert donation info) of course add a salutation!

the only one I know of short of a bank account is PayPal
Best of luck with receiving funds and moving to AK!

Presumably your family and friends know that you're moving to Alaska.

I wouldn't ask for money; sorry, just would not. I'd start giving them household stuff that you won't be able to take with you and tell them what others have said about paring down your stuff. Just start offering them all the stuff you won't be able to take. And tell them that you won't be accepting gifts this year because you won't be able to take them with you. And leave it at that.

Now that is just downright ungreedy of of you.

Ray and Stiffy won't be able to parse that at all.

you guys are all offering really good advice and tips for ways to approach this situation. I like the idea of an appropriate letter explaining the situation and I also like the subtle hint idea. Maybe I can come up with some way to combine the two. Kind of a here is our things we would like to hand down to you and donations are appreciated haha. Thank you all

Well, you can try having an online bachelors auction, but Blue and I couldn't even get 50 cents for Stiff...but if you have a lot of single friends that don't read here, we may be able to scare up some interest.
