in the 80s there was still free homestead land available, but you had to live there for ~12 months consecutively, and it's in areas that are "plains drop flour and sugar supplies" type of places (no roads, no people, no anything).

Default Moving to wild Alaska..

You should do it. Just sell your junk and go. Learn the skills to prevail. It feels good to beat mother nature. You will work very hard if you expect to make it. No one else is responsible for your actions or lack of knowledge or skill. So start with the known and work your way to the unknown. Anyone can make it with enough determination. Remember, most people lived the rough life at one time in the last 150 years out west. I have flown many people out to remote locations. 98% were gone in a year. I know of several cases of people buying land on the internet only to discover that the land or cabin they were sold belonged to someone other than the "seller".The islands on the west coast are very inhospitable. No trees, little game and no 911. The wind blows at hurricane force for days sometimes.
The state of Alaska sells land because it is required by the state constitution. Most of the BLM land is suppossed to be state land as a result of the state charter. But the feds have illegally held it for 50 years. Whatever you do, do not move directly to a remote location. Start in a town or village and go out on weekends. Build up your skills and callouses. Ask questions. Alaskans love to help.Stick to it. Anything worth doing is tough. After you have been feeding yourself for three years in a cabin you built heated by wood you cut, you will be a sourdough. Good luck.

After three years, he would be goofier than a loon living by himself....

Besides, there are rules to becoming a Sourdough, pissing in the Yukon is one, making love to a Grizzly and fighting with a local gal using your bare hands.... er, something like that.... maybe it was the other way around?
