Population of Alaska older, more diversified: Alaska News | Alaska news at adn.com

How many think we'll be just like the -48 quicker than they thought? Alaska's population is growing.

Aaaanyway, attempting to steer somewhere resembling back on course...

I think that eventually you may be right. Not for a generation or so, though. After spending 10 years in the lower 48 and talking to people from Ohio to Florida and everywhere in-between, I can say that, without a shadow of a doubt, 99% of the people I talked to said they would "love to visit Alaska," "it's on their bucket list," "I'd love to take one of them cruises," "All the pictures and them TV shows sure do make it look beautiful".... and so on. But I'd say, and this is being pretty generous, only about 10% ever said, with any seriousness, that they would love (or at least like) to live up there, north, south, or otherwise.

But I think as the "global community" grows and younger generations attempt to make some changes and get free of whatever idea of a "bad situation" they think they're in, and consider places like Colorado, Washington, Oregon, Alaska, and even many international destinations with a rep for environmental concerns, career opportunities, and any better way of life than they think they're getting. It'll take a while before we notice Alaska becoming more like the -48, I'm sure of it.

The only thing I truly worry about, is that when and if it does happen, no one will notice until it's too late.

So what do you consider being more "like" the -48---just more people?

The rural and bush areas in the state are already shrinking and will probably continue to do so. The more urban areas already are like the -48, except that now what with the Mexicans swarming up, Pat might see one that got loose from Anchorage in her local Wal*Mart from time to time.

It has already happend.. Long time ago !!

Too late; it is only going to get much worse with all the desperate people planning to come to The Last Frontier (to screw it up). With over crowding!! And of course with the 'tudes' they possess. (attitudes).

Yeah, basically. And all the trappings that come with a more dense population. I could give a toss about their ethnicity. That's one of the reasons my family is headed back up. In the village we live in here in southern Ohio, there are no more black people than I can count on one hand and only one Mexican family of two brothers. No Asians. No Pacific Islanders. No day laborers hanging out at these Home Depots, I can tell you that. Everyone here is so racist they make it no secret, that's for sure. My wife and I have always thought the behavior here was deplorable, and fortunately our boys caught that lesson from us. Heck, not that it matters, but my youngest son's best friend is one of those 5 black people around here, and he's actually adopted into an all white family, making them of course stick out like a sore thumb but also making them good friends we will miss when we're gone. You seem to be the ONLY one in this thread making ANY racial aspersions whatsoever! Maybe it IS based on others' past posts, but if I am to take them at the general meaning and not any implied one?

Yeah, basically.

The focus of the article seems to be not so much as people in general moving up but rather on people who are non white doing so. Not sure how that makes us "more like the -48".

Anyway, I suppose the urban areas will continue to grow and that the rural and bush populations will continue to shrink. I do hope that those seeking new lives in the urban parts of the state do not find race or color to be a barrier.

Alaska will be different than the lower 48 for a LONG time. For the very reason mentioned above...very few people really want to live here.

And as Met said, the population is actually shrinking in the bush. So while the urban areas will have a more diverse population, most of Alaska will still be very different than the rest of the country.

You are the one that keeps bringing this up.

My point in the article was that more and more people are moving here and we are becoming more diverse. IMO it will take AK. another 10-15 years to catch up with the -48.
