why are real estate & rentals are so high priced in Juneau? Maybe it's the Government Professionals keep the city high priced margin.

Isolation and Juneau being land-locked makes real property a more limited asset.

Hear its real easy to get jobs in Juneau because it's travel industry cash flow having Alaska residence stay on the Juneau Island and need service area type jobs. I think it's best working at Denali National Park area for summers and don't stay during winter months. However Juneau good has year round jobs.

Er, yeah I guess that's not the right word. What I was referring to was that it's hemmed in by mountains and water such that there is little room to expand and grow (much like Seattle). Is there a correct term for this geographical condition?

Ah. This is true.

I always thought it was odd that they picked Juneau, not Anchorage, to be the capital. Anyone know why that is?

not easily accessible, no major protests in the capital, when everything goes to the crapper no major influx of people running away for safe refuge!!

Juneau was already the territorial capital of Alaska (since 1911) so it just made sense to keep it there, although there have been several initiatives to move it. There was a move in the 50's to move the capital north but it failed. In the 70's voters decided to move it to Willow, but again it failed because of a new initiative requiring voter approval for new construction bonds. Of course Juneau and Fairbanks citizens were a major factor in passing that.

Yeah, state politics are bizarre, that's for sure. I think either Anchorage or Fairbanks would be the best capital. Fairbanks would be a good one because it's in the interior and represents the true intensity of Alaska climate-wise and in the vegetation type. Willow, huh? That never would have crossed my mind.

At the time, why would they have chosen a few tents in the mud as the state capital?
