When we go Hooligan fishing we “catch and release”. There used to be a couple of commercial guys that caught them on the Susitna River. Several guides I know take quite a few people, resident Alaskans, out to dip net them on the Susitna River.

Just curious, where was the location listed originally? Whitefish, Montana is a place I dream of living/visiting one day. Might have to be in another lifetime, because I'm pretty set on Alaska, but that is one helluva place if you ask me. The people don't seem too bright though if this dude is any indication...

welcome to the Alaska forum where members particularly the long time AK residents will cut people with the above attributes no slack and will give no help. You get back what you put out.

@AKstafford...And a kayak in the Turnagain Arm is suicide. So... good luck with that. dang...don't go telling him about the bore-tide and such...this is how nature culls out the idjits of the world!
Yup, I believe the proper term is "Natural Selection".

God help me... I watched an episode of 1000 Ways to Die, last night. It was gross, but like any car accident, it drew me in. I see this thread on kayaking on the mouth of 20-mile River and I think, "Oh look, way to die #744!!!"

I've never heard of commercially fishing them. And only a tard would buy them to eat. Maybe for bait. We used to catch them as kids in the Kenai River right in Sterling, and then we'd burry them in the garden for fertilizer. Some peole might deep fry them like my family did in MN with smelt. I could never eat those either.

I highly recommend fishing them from a kayak, in the middle of the mouth of twenty mile river. With a dipnet. Amongst the other 3,000 people.
Aren't they called "Candlefish" because people would put them on a stick and they would literally burn for an hour like a candle? Sounds pretty nasty to me.

I only said that because they seem to run right next to the bank. So fishing might not be very good in the middle of the river! But I could just see 3000 peoples pointing and laughing at the guy in the kayak, fishing with a dipnet in the middle of the river. Dipnet in one hand, paddle in the other, with the bore tide riding up his you know what!
