In some of these threads people seem to be implying that year round work is a desirable thing. I would like to know why that is. I'd rather drink coyote pee than work year round.

The reliability of job stability is comforting, but it sure gets to be a grind in most cases.

More seriously...in the Pebble mine and other threads, one of the reasons the proponents say it would be good for the area would be the year round jobs it would create as opposed to the salmon industry.

People who work in the fishing industry have traditionally crammed an entire year's worth of work into several short months and have been happy doing so. So what's the allure of full time year round jobs?

You have a good point. I think working a seasonal job would be difficult only in the fact that I am married to a spender and we would not have enough money saved up to last through the winter.

Well...my point is is that out here in the fishing villages, seasonal work is a way of life, yet people seem to want to come in and change it for the so called better. Personally I can't imagine anything more godawful than a year round job.

Even outside of the fishing villages and industry, the North is by nature a place where productivity is determined by season. Of course that doesn't apply so much anymore to the urban areas an of course those living there need a certain amount of year round jobs.

And yeah...it's tough for those who work seasonally to make it through the winters at times Security is good, nothing at all to be scoffed at.

But some of us like it this way and it does get a bit tiring when year round jobs are touted as some sort of incentive to give up our way of life.

I think it would be absolutely great to work seasonal if I could swing living expenses the rest of the time but reality for me is it just wouldn't work out. I'm not a spender but living in a city now and paying for my daughter's last two years of living expenses in college, I have to work. Now that the economy is tanking again and the stock markets are in the toilet... this puts me in the bracket of "retirement what's that" catagory...

I would NEVER try to change anyone's way of life for anything in the world.. I wish you every happiness and success in the way you work and live Met... I have nothing but respect for a woman who has taken on what you've had to in this last season...

I think many people would like to work seasonally (I know I would) but aren't in a career where it is possible. I would much prefer to have time off to travel, explore, read... I work for the federal government, and it has security and benefits, but not nearly the flexibility to work seasonally (at least not with what I do)...

Think you can teach me to fish, and set me on a different path in life? I'd give it a whirl!

some people have to work year round to have health insurance as it is way too expensive otherwise not to mention saving for the day one can't work...retirement also!
