Right on cue again. Joe Garney is very famous in Alaska! all over this state and it has absolutely nothing what so ever to do with the dog race.

But then again - ...your opinion is all that counts!

ahhhh you didn't spell his name correctly.....Joe Garnie lives in Teller, not Golovin. Teller is an Inupiat village north of Nome, Golovin is a Yupik village south of Nome and they are more than 100 miles apart.

Joe Garney is who I stated he is....correct spelling of ones name mean all the difference!

I wasn't a big Joe fan, when him and Libby Riddles were together, she would go into town (Nome) with bruises where he'd hit her after she won the Iditarod with his dog team (Friends lived in Nome and new both of them), I just don't respect any guy that hits women... Couldn't care who he is.

But on a brighter note!

Although Norman Vahn (spelt wrong I think) is my Hero and moved to Alaska in the late 50's to early 60's. He use to wash dishes in a small cafe on 4th or 5th street, called "The Spot" if I recall correctly. I got to meet him there when I was a kid, my dad took me there for a hamburger. Norman was telling me that he went to the South Pole and all sorts of (at the time) really unbelievable stuff!

Couldn't believe that a guy that did all that would work in a place like that. He came to Nenana a lot in later years and was a good friend of a friend of mine when I met him again. By then I had found out his stories were true and I was in awe.

Sad he is gone, he wasn't from Alaska Orginally, but he was as Alaskan as anyone!

Marc
Methinks "infamous" may be closer to the truth.
